Girl Nursery Makeover

June 5, 2014 by Shelley

Camille and I did another room makeover! This time it was a nursery. Our neighbor has 3 boys and was pregnant with her 4th and was finally getting a girl! She decided she wanted hot pink and grey.
BEFORE–boy toddler room

AFTER–hot pink and grey nursery! We wanted it to look sophisticated. Camille did a great job hanging the curtains. We were determined to do all the “man work” ourselves this time. Tip–get a really light weight mini drill, so much easier for the ladies!
Chair and footstool–BEFORE–faded light pink mauve velvet chair that we rescued from the thrift store for $5.
It was headed for the dumpster and we talked the sales guy into letting us buy it—well he told us we couldn’t buy it AND we couldn’t take it…and since I usually don’t take “no” for an answer very well, I asked if I could talk to someone else. Next guy came out after we overheard the first guy say, “they won’t leave!” He was happy to sell it to us for what we wanted to pay…$5.
We were laughing about this story and telling my husband about it, and he jokingly said–“that’s why we’re married…you won’t take “no” for an answer”. Let’s just say he was more nervous than I was about getting married. haha!
After we got the chair home, we realized it looked pretty sad, faded, and tired. I started thinking, maybe we can dye it! I googled it and found someone that had done it. So we gave it a try!

AFTER!! Rit dye worked FABULOUS!! The footstool, I picked up at a free yardsale. I cut the pillow top thing off and slipcovered it in some of my leftover grey polka dot fabric.

3 cups hot water and 4 capfuls RIT dye, put in spray bottle and saturate the chair and let it dry in the sun. Wear gloves and do it outside!
The chair took the dye really well and once it was dry, it didn’t transfer onto clothing.

We picked up the chandelier for $7 and Camille spray painted the brass silver and the candle stick sections white to freshen it up. I finally learned how to switch out light fixtures, since I hated waiting for Heber to do it for me. We were pretty proud of our electrical abilities!

Picked up changing station dresser for $40. We framed some scrapbooking paper in some $1 frames from the thrift store. Nicole still need to sew up the changing pad cover, so we just wrapped the fabric around it.

Nicole with her 3 boys!

I made the bumpers of extra fabric I had kicking around.

We found a $2 hot pink table cloth at the thrift store. I turned it into a bedskirt and was able to keep some of the original hemming which made it a quick sew.

Original serged edges from Table cloth. There was only enough to do 3 sides–which I figured was fine, the one side is against the wall and you can’t see it anyways.

Her youngest boy is still in his crib, so we found this crib on KSL.com (online classifieds) for $40. I use 2″ foam to stuff my bumpers–it makes them stand up better than the batting filled ones. Foam usually runs $30 for a bumper set, but I lucked out and found a nice unused piece of foam at the thrift store for $2!

Nicoles budget was $200. Which was tight considering she had no furniture. The glider, changing station, and crib was staying in her youngest sons room.

Here’s the breakdown
$40 dresser
$40 crib
$10 dye and spray paint
$15 curtains
$17 ikea curtain rod
$4 lamp
$2 foam
$30 hobby lobby accessories
$40 Thrift store (chandelier, clock, frames, linens, etc.)
$198 total!

It’s amazing what you can do when you get creative, try to use what you have and shop second hand. Camille and I are working hard on our “Styling Cents”–reuse, repurpose, and revive your space decorating guide! Hoping to have it available in the next few months.

Jenn’s Home Makeover!

April 16, 2014 by Shelley

Two weeks ago, Camille texted me with the idea of redoing a room for Jenn to lift her spirits and to give her something happy and exciting to focus on. She’s been through a lot in the past year, and we knew lots of people in the neighborhood would love to chip in and be a part of it.

Of course I was on board. Decorating and making something out of nothing is my happy place. Camille put together a secret group on Facebook and added everyone from the neighborhood, and people started donating time, $, and materials! About 30-35 people helped out in some way!

3 days later on Monday, we met with Jenn at her house to take a look around and show her the Pinterest board we put together with our ideas. Jenn chose an inspiration pic.

INSPIRATION PIC!

The next day we bought paint and headed to Ikea! Where we found some AMAZING finds. Entertainment center for $90 and 8×10 jute rug for $105.

Who knew there were so many options for white paint?? We bought 3 gallons of Primer, and 3 gallons of white paint. Thinking that would be enough. Mid way through painting we had to send Heber to buy 2 more gallons! 8 Gallons total!! We ended up painting front room, kitchen, hallway, and stairwell.

FRONT ROOM—BEFORE!! Tan walls, sponge painted wall, and dark chocolate wall.

Ceiling fan, swaggy curtain–but some great pieces we saw we could reuse. The pic to the left of the entertainment center ended up being our inspiration piece for the room It was a cowboy pic.

We loved the crates and knew we could put them to good use. As for the patio chair, we put that out on the front porch.

The room felt DARK. We wanted something light and bright, but still Jenn. She loves tans, browns, and blues. Here’s Camille showing Jenn our ideas on Pinterest. She was quite hesitant about our all white walls idea to make the space brighter and more cohesive. But she said she’d trust us :).

We wanted to streamline the pictures on the walls to make it look more organized and clean lined.
As soon as we finished meeting with Jenn, Camille and I both jumped on all the local classified sites and found treasures! Vintage Yardsale Page on FB, Eagle Mountain 24/7 Yardsale page on FB, and KSL.
End Table $20
Half way built coffee table $20
2 Matching Chandliers $12.50 each

We have a wood shop teacher in our neighborhood, who made us these great box shelves with his wifes help. He also patched some wall holes for us.

We organized a painting party for Saturday, and were hoping to install that evening! We pulled this off in 6 days from the day we met with Jenn to install with everyones help! I even got help with the sewing! We had about 7-8 people show up for each painting shift (primer/topcoat). I love my neighborhood out in the middle of nowhere (Eagle Mountain, UT)!

AFTER!!!! The tufted chair we found on a vintage yard sale site on Facebook for $40. We kept the tan leather couch, we debated ditching it…but every inspiration pics Jenn liked had a Tan sectional. So we went with it and made it work. We left a space between the lamps for a new TV that Jenn’s in the process of getting.

AFTER–the Jute rug gave some great texture to the room and the coffee table ended up amazing. My boys helped sand, stain, and poly it. The crates we reused up on the ledge. We were able to reuse the spriggy vase on the end table and it worked great!

Restore had the second matching chair to the one I bought a month ago, and we snatched it up for $10. It was blue and would work perfect as our second chair.

We wanted a blue floral fabric for the curtains, kind of like the inspiration pic. We found this great Medallion print at the Orem Home Fabrics for $8/yd less my 20% discount. Don’t forget to mention “Slipcovers by Shelley” at the Orem location and receive 20% off regular priced fabric as well.

I got the lamps for $5 each from the coffee table person. I saw they were moving and asked it they had anything else they were selling, we needed lots of stuff! She also gave me the grass sprigs for free that are on the coffee table. The two baskets were 60% off at Joanns–$6 each.

We placed the Cowboy pic over the stairwell. It’s amazing how it popped off the white walls! PERFECT!

We also bought a few other fabrics for pillows. Blue pinstripe cotton and Chenille stripe.

We picked up some old books from Restore for $1 each and some other random accessories (glass, silver, pottery bowls, vases, etc. from Goodwill for $1-$3 each)

KITCHEN–since you can see the dining area from the front door, we wanted to freshen up this space as well. We hung the second matching chandelier and made a second set of curtains. The metal shelf with the plant we picked up for $2 at DI (Goodwill).

When we first met with Jenn, we asked to see her room. She was reluctant, but finally let us take a look. We were hoping we’d be able to pull off a “quick change” with little to no $.

BEDROOM—BEFORE!

BEDROOM–AFTER! We found a chocolate brown bedskirt at Goodwill for $5. From that I came home and looked through my stash of fabric trying to come up with a color scheme that would be bright and happy. I had my old gray euros and foot warmer, and just enough yellow fabric to put on the front of two shams, and enough to do the rectangle bird pillow. I also had a round end table that was kicking around and not being used.

I called my sister to see if she had any king bedding she wasn’t using and would be willing to give away. She had a white comforter! PERFECT! Then we switched out the painting above the bed with the metal piece that used to be hanging in the stairwell.

Not bad for $5 out of pocket. It’s all about trying to use what you have! Oh yes, and it’s all about the bed! Every girl needs a bedskirt right?

Jenn LOVED IT!!!

Total we got $700 in donations to pull off this makeover. Here’s a bit of the breakdown.
$270- Ikea- Rug, entertainment center, throw blanket, curtain rods, and rings
$25- chandeliers
$30- coffee table and two lamps
$100- fabric for two sets of curtains and three pillows

$100- paint and primer
$20- Wood and finishing nails

Larsen Master Bedroom

September 16, 2013 by Shelley

One of my passions is decorating!!! Camille (one of my best friends and running partner) loves it just as much as me. When I say decorating– I mean “Thrift Store” Decorating, scrappy, repurpose, use what you have, make it work, and make it beautiful on a budget!!
We talked our friend Brooke into letting us do her Master Bedroom. Camille started a pin board on pinterest and had Brooke pin the things she loved. After browsing her pinboard we chose the color scheme of NAVY and CORAL.
This was her inpiration pic from Censational Girl blog.
BEFORE—her husbands (Mike) only request was to keep the waterbed! I took a look at it and figured we could make it work. I could make it look like a platform bed, and more modern. I figured we could turn the headboard around to update it and lose all the cubbies, mirror and sconces.
BEFORE—too short of curtains, and not so cute valances—sorry Brooke. I also wanted to eliminate the home gym in the corner—it was time for a “Big Girl” room.
AFTER!!!
I also slipcovered the lamp shades in a blue diamond fabric. The duvet is from Overstock.com–King size was $80–beats buying the fabric and sewing it myself! A king size Duvet requires a minimum of 6 yds per side….12 yds total.

We bought Lenda Curtains and rods from IKEA–and Heber came and hung them for us. Those chairs were $16 for the pair and the upholstry was great. We didn’t have to do any work on them. I like the eclectic look–“ladies chair” and “MAN chair”. My sister gave me the rug, and I decided it would make Brooke’s room more than it “made” my guest room—so I decided to donate it to the cause.

My sister sold Brooke two of these dressers for $30 each…. Our art work is a vintage card table, we got for $2!

$6 chair! $1 magazine basket! Free rug!

Notice the light fixtures—Heber was a great sport and came and hung them for us! They were a little controversial and I may be the only person who was in LOVE with them. What do you think? I think the add some glam to the room!

We love all our little trinkets that ranged in price from $.50- $3.99

Look how well the spray painted file cabinet turned out! I don’t like “bed in a bag”, I like things to look collected and not decorated. Everything doesn’t have to be matchy- matchy. It gives more visual interest if things aren’t the same.

See–Brass, silver, glass, and dark wood all on the same end table—

We weren’t sure how the sides of the headboard would look when it was all done—but I actually love it.

Coral fabric on pillow was from www.fabric.com for about $7/yd

PROCESS—Hit the local Thrift Store without Brooke—Spent $65 on 2 chairs, 4 lamps, card table, magazine basket, and some trinket accessories… Camille and I were on a HIGH—-All the while Brookes husband is texting us joking….saying we won’t be reimbursed for junk! We told him it was all FABULOUS JUNK!!!

We love mixing the rustic, with modern, and mixing brass with silver.

We hit a second thrift store and spent another $4 on a grey IKAT dress (revamped into pillows), and some other accessories.

We gave Mike homework—he had to paint the room grey for us. Then we took over from there! We sanded down the bed and flipped the headboard around. Camille was great with that sander! We then stained the bed Espresso.

Bonus–the back of the headboard was raw wood and took the stain BEAUTIFULLY! It made me happy!

We needed a second end table–our first one was given to us by my sister when I helped her move. I saw one out in the rain at my clients house, and asked if she was getting rid of it. She graciously let me have it and I picked up a can of white spray paint on my way home!

Brooke’s light fixtures were builder grade, and not very exciting. She trusted me and let me pick up a pair of these brass one’s from the local Restore Habitat for Humanity for $10 each! She wasn’t so sure about them—but they worked perfectly!

Total we spent $550 and that included down comforter, sheets, duvet, paint, light fixtures, two dressers, two end tables, curtains, curtain rods, spray paint, accessories, 2 chairs, 3 pillows, 4 lamps, and rug….One mans junk is another mans treasure!
