Heavyweight White Linen Slipcovers

May 8, 2014 by Shelley

My client had lots of items! 2 wing backs, 1 couch, 1 loveseat and 6 dining room chairs! We ordered some heavyweight white linen from Ulster Linen Company for about $28/yd….this stuff is BEAUTIFUL and heavy weight!!!

Wingbacks–BEFORE–worn teal velvet. All of this furniture was from her childhood growing up!

LOVESEAT–BEFORE–The linen was really heavy, but it still had a hard time covering up those dark flowers. I made a separate undergarment (like a slip) out of muslin for more coverage. Just a quick slipcover out of muslin with no piping and a  simple hem–super fast.

DINING CHAIRS—BEFORE–Cruel covered seats that were getting worn. We actually just used a basic white twill cotton on these and self lined them. I thought the linen would be too heavy and the skirts wouldn’t hang right.

AFTER–love the white contrast with all the dark wood!

AFTER–lots of velcro openings on these chairs to make them work with the wood coming down the center back.

AFTER–used same cotton twill for the knife pleat edge instead of the heavy linen.

LOVESEAT–AFTER

COUCH–AFTER–apparently I got too excited to put the new slipcover on I forgot to take a before pic!

Tie opening on back and knife pleat edge.

Finials came off–so I slipcovered like normal and sewed a button hole, so the finial could screw in after the slipcover was installed.

Topstitched Couch

January 2, 2014 by Shelley

First off– I am happy to tell you I have been working hard on my “Get it Covered” Advanced Slipcovering guide. I have all the pics submitted and I have started to edit! I am hoping to have it ready in the next few weeks! Now on to my post…
My client was moving into a new place and wanted a new slipcover for her couch. She got a beautiful neutral cotton with tiny specs in it. She decided to mix it up and not do piping. She wanted a waterfall skirt and topstitching.
Couch–BEFORE

Couch–AFTER–neutral with topstitching and waterfall skirt. I did a 1″ blind hem on this skirt.

I love the way it turned out.

Topstitching detail.

SIDE NOTE—

We decided to spend Christmas at the cabin this year. We spent 3 nights there and I think the kids got a years worth of tubing in. When we first arrived there was 18″ of powder on our steep driveway that we trudged up with all our bags, food, and gifts. By the time we left the driveway was a slick sheet of ice from all the tubes and sleds.

As soon as we arrived the kids wrapped lights on the stairway and hung the stalkings. Our little tree stand is a cinderblock with a towel wrapped around the tree (stick).

We survived 3 nights! I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. 3 nights is the longest we’ve stayed there at one time. 800 sq ft, no computer, no tv, no friends= a lot of family time! We played lots of card games, went on walks, sledded, and watched some movies. PERFECT.

My sister offered to do our family pics again this year! How could I say no? This is my favorite family pic ever! Everyone is truly happy! No one was fighting or crying….This was taken just off the running path that I run a few times a week. I can’t believe how tall our boys have gotten! I think this will be the last year they are all shorter than me.

Two Couches

August 23, 2013 by Shelley

My client wanted to make her room less “formal”—she said no one ever goes in this room, because they are afraid to sit on the white couches. She wants the room to be used and lived in.

 COUCHES—BEFORE

COUCHES–AFTER–She went with a great tan/gold solid that had a chunky linen weave look to it.

I did 1.5″ blind hem on the skirt

She was still in the process of picking out new pillow fabrics to make the room less “formal”– But I think they still look great with the old pillows.

The back cushions were attached–so I cut them off and covered them separately.
SIDE NOTE#1—Anniversary date was GREAT! We got to rapel down Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon.

 Here I am coming down….

Suited up and ready to go!
SIDE NOTE#2–I’ve been thinking about my next project for the house. I want to take out the wall to the right of the front door and open up that corner. There’s a spare bedroom behind that wall now, and that’s where I want to put the office. I also want to remove the carpet from the stairs and do wood stairs and a double hand rail with Craftsman style newel posts.
Here’s my inspiration pic for the stairs and newell posts. This pic is from Remodelaholic Blog. She shares how they did it.
